Vodafone Australia 3G UpdateVodafone Australia recently announced they are in the final stages of testing their high speed 3G network in major regional centres, which will go live in the first week in May 2009. This upgrade expands 3G coverage to Vodafone customers in areas including Albury- Wodonga, Ballarat, Ballina, Bunbury, Byron Bay, Cairns, Darwin, Hobart, Kiama, Lismore, Mackay, Newcastle, Toowoomba, Townsville, Wollongong, Bowral, Nowra and Wagga Wagga. The upgrade also expands coverage around Adelaide and Canberra. Customers in all other existing Vodafone 2G coverage areas throughout Australia are planned to experience Vodafone 3G coverage by 31 August 2009. The upgrade was originally scheduled for completion in December 2008, but was extended due to the complexity of the project. In May 3G coverage will reach 80 per cent of the areas Australians live and work. Vodafone 3G and EDGE - December 08Vodafone Australia announced that their 900MHz 3G HSPA network will be rolled out and switched on in December this year. As part of this 180 new 2G sites will be built and EDGE will be deployed across the existing GPRS/2G networks. For machine to machine markets this is great news - an increase in 3G coverage in regional areas, an upgrade to the speeds (up to 180kbps) available on the existing GPRS systems ( 2.75G if you like) via EDGE, often with modems substantially less expensive than 3G equivalents, and continuing significant investment in the GPRS/2G network - expansion and upgrades. |
